pain is the staff of life

The Big Sleep (late blog about a late actor)

Posted in Uncategorized by ruthanzo on March 10, 2008

If any of the stories about Heath Ledger’s sad demise are to be believed, several sleep medications were found in his NYC flat at the time of his death. Presumably he had these to help him combat galloping insomnia. I’ve been there myself and I think I understand the pattern. You want to be ready when the sleep train arrives so you drink some wine then pop a pill before going through the turnstile. But tonight it’s late coming into the station. When it finally does roll in, your temazepam sleep ticket has worn off and will only take you so far, so you boost it with some diazepam hoping that when it’s time to disembark you’re ready to take on the day. The following night you choose the zopiclone option (the butterfly plague) cause it’s nice to dream but you have an early morning call and you’re bumping into walls cause you’re still asleep. By late pm anxiety sets in so you call up the lorazepam from the pharm team. The work schedule is killing. It’s the age of globalization and a lot of the time you’re continent-hopping. The producers can get the sets built cheaper in Vancouver, and hey there’s a great photographer in Dubrovnik that wants to do a photo-spread on you. You’re a jetlagged zombie and you don’t know where you live anymore. Having a normal family life is practically impossible. You start feeling insecure about your talent (the drugs are changing your looks) even though you’ve been nominated by the Academy for a best actor award and you’re still under 30. You’re very much in the game, but it always seems to be your move. Billions of plummeting greenbacks are at stake. The Hollowood superheroes (real and imagined) are busy saving the World from terrorists but for some reason they can’t help you with your night terrors (often they are the cause of them.) You should have stayed in your native Oz and become a shepherd. Then you could have counted sheep jumping over fences and dozed off in a Spring meadow.
