The Levant

Posted in Uncategorized by ruthanzo on September 23, 2010

My mother was a nut for Gershwin and when I was quite young I remember my father saying they had put Oscar L. in a straightjacket. I’m not sure I knew who he was and what that meant but it stuck with me. The first lp I ever bought was Oscar Levant playing the Gershwin Concerto in F. I would lie down on the floor next to the speaker and go into a reverie. It was the B side of An American in Paris and the B’s had it, they expanded the mind. Not Fade Away. Later I would discover that there was a lot of Debussy in Gershwin but til then the only Debussy I’d heard was Kate playing Dr. Gradus at Parnassum, an end of year piece. The first lp Kate bought was Old Time Music at Clarence Ashley’s. Go figure.
